When camping, it’s important to be prepared. Because a camper is outdoors, often miles from a town, one has to consider things they wouldn’t normally think of. Additionally, a smart camper will want to pack as lightly as possible, especially if they’re going to be hiking their equipment to their campsite. One ideal piece of camping material you do not want to leave the house without is some kind of rain protective gear. Whether it is for you personally, like a poncho, or something that can protect your campsite, being prepared for inclement weather is always beneficial.

Firewood

It is important to know if one can collect firewood at the site or you must bring their own. Firewood is heavy, and checking the regulations of the campground can save one a lot of weight and space when you and your family are packing for the trip. At any rate, firewood should only be collected from down or dead wood, never cutting down a live tree.

Meals

Plan out your meals for you and your family. Many campsites, depending on where you decide to go will not have a grocery store nearby. A good tip is to bring all of the food you are expected to eat beforehand instead of relying on a possible grocery store.

The most basic considerations are food and shelter. A camper should pack both meals and snacks for trails, as one burns more calories camping than at home.

Items that are needed for a camping trip include:

A Tent, this includes the footprint tarp and an optional repair kit.

-Sleeping bag, down-filled sleeping bags are best for colder nights, something lighter like cotton can be used in other cases.

Water or Water Purification Method. Bottled water is fine for a short weekend getaway, but longer trips will require a filter or purification tablets. It’s also a wise idea to check to see if the campsite has running water.

Food. This includes both meals and snacks such as trail mix. Outdoors supply stores will often carry a selection of ready-to-eat meals that can be prepared on a campfire or by adding hot water.

First Aid Kit, one should be prepared to treat small cuts, scrapes and bruises. A first aid kit should contain bandages, antiseptics such as hydrogen peroxide, and rubbing alcohol, to name a few items.

Extra Clothes. It’s important to check the weather ahead of time. cargo shorts and t-shirts are fine for a clear, spring weekend, but not for a cool fall excursion.

Ask your family what other odds and ends they would like to bring on the trip as well. There are plenty of outdoor activities that are fun for the whole family and easily packed with camping materials!
